Unearthing sounds consisted of a sound walk and performative værksted devised with Jacob Remin and held at Art Hub Copenhagen in August 2021.
Unearthing sounds is an artistic exploration inquiring how we can lend an ear to the earth, attune our perception to the voices of the subterranean. We invited participants to an exterior excursion to visit marked locations in and around Vesterbro's Kødbyen to collect earth/matter and bring it back to Art Hub where together we interrogated it through machine aided expanded listening and automatic uttering.
During this session we asked: How can subterranean voices be heard? What type of ear do these voices call for? How can we locate them? More broadly, how can we recover age-old concepts of listening and attuning, which were historically precluded by modern sciences, without falling hostage to them? The værksted is directly inpsired by the 19th century practices of animal magnetism (also called "mesmerism") and induced trance as linked to the arts, a conjugation epitomed by the early surrealist work of André Breton and Philippe Soupault in Les Champs Magnétiques of 1920.
